Superintendent Christopher Moos announced that Capulin Volcano NM will sponsor two guided tours to the Folsom Archeological Site on Saturday, May 19th. The Folsom Site Tour is one of the events that the National Park Service is sponsoring for New Mexico Heritage Preservation Month. Up to 25 participants will be allowed on each tour.

Angel Fire New Mexico PropertyTo reserve a space, participants must register before May 14th by calling Capulin Volcano NM at 505-278-2201 x 232. A four-wheel drive vehicle is required and car pools will be arranged. Each tour is limited to 25 participants. The first group will meet at 8:00 am at the Monument visitor center for a short presentation by Dr. Adrienne Anderson, National Park Service archeologist. Dr. Anderson did her dissertation field work at the site in 1970 and 1971. The tour will depart for the Folsom site after the presentation. A second tour will begin at 1:00 pm at the visitor center for the presentation, then travel to the site. Each person should bring hiking shoes, a light jacket, sunscreen, water, and hat. Participants should be prepared for some hiking if roads are not passable.

The Folsom Archeological Site is important in the history of North American archeology. Excavation of this bison kill site by what is now the Denver Museum of Natural History in 1926 established the antiquity of human occupation in North America. The Folsom Archeological Site is currently administered by State of New Mexico Commissioner of Public Lands, and public access is granted only through a Right of Entry Permit which Capulin Volcano obtained for this event.
