Price of Propane, When will AF Residents see Relief |

Written by Angel Fire Blog Publisher

Tuesday, 18 November 2008 |
The Santa Fe New Mexican ran an article by Bob Quick 11/17/08 titled: 'Cheaper gas, propane bring relief to struggling households'
An excerpt from the article reads: "The price of propane, which closely tracks the price of crude oil, also is down this heating season, falling from $2.69 per gallon to $2.24 per gallon in the last three weeks, according to Jose Garcia, one of the managers of AAA Gas Service, a propane company."
I have been curious why propane hasn't gone down much in Angel Fire. I telephoned a propane provider in Las Vegas NM and their price is $1.99, but they don't service Angel Fire. So if propane is $2.24 in Santa Fe and $1.99 in Las Vegas, why is propane in Angel Fire $2.44 - $2.99?
A couple months ago, there was a man in Taos who would daily stand at the corner of Hwy 585 & 68 with a sign 'Gas in Santa Fe is $2.49. This is when gas in Taos was over $3.00. The Taos stations rather quickly lowered their gas prices. I wonder if something similar would bring propane prices down in Angel Fire, or what it would take to get local propane providers to give us a little relief.

by Richard M. Stallman Don't you just hate receiving Word documents in email messages? Word attachments are annoying, but worse than that, they impede people from switching to free software. Maybe we can stop this practice with a simple collective effort. All we have to do is ask each person who sends us a Word file to reconsider that way of doing things. |

As the cold weather sets in, many cabin owners are preparing to leave their summer and fall retreats until next season. A cabin is an investment as well as a home away from home, and you want to do as much as possible to protect it. Many cabin owners are aware of the need to winterize their cabins in order to protect their heating, plumbing systems and so on, but taking the necessary precautions to keep out intruders is just as important. Researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) have discovered a population of the endangered desert pupfish (Cyprinodon macularius)in constructed ponds along the southeastern shore of the Salton Sea, in south-central California. Preliminary estimates of more than 1,000 pupfish will need to be evaluated by a detailed survey that will be conducted as soon as the appropriate permits are obtained. Dr. Douglas Barnum, scientist with the USGS Salton Sea Science Office, called the discovery a "scientific windfall" that will provide a unique opportunity to learn more about this endangered species. Dr. Michael Saiki, fisheries biologist with the USGS Western Fisheries Research Center's Dixon Duty Station noted, "What's significant about this discovery is the large number of pupfish we are seeing!"

A Zero Energy Angel Fire Home (ZEH) combines state-of-the-art, energy-efficient construction and appliances with commercially available renewable energy systems, such as solar water heating and solar electricity. The combination results in a home that produces its own energy—as much or more than it needs. Even though the home might be connected to a utility grid, it has net zero energy consumption from the utility provider. |

This is called passive solar design or climatic design. Wood Heating Your Angel Fire Home |

Monday, 02 July 2007 |
Wood and Pellet Heating Before the 20th century, 90% of Americans burned wood to heat their homes. As fossil fuel use rose, the percentage of Americans using wood for fuel dropped, falling as low as one percent by 1970. Then during the energy crises of the 1970s, interest in wood heating resurfaced as a renewable energy alternative. Newer on the scene are pellet fuel appliances, which burn small pellets that look like rabbit feed and measure 3/8 to 1 inch in length. Pellets are made from compacted sawdust, wood chips, bark, agricultural crop waste, waste paper, and other organic materials. Some pellet fuel appliances can burn a wide variety of biomass fuels, including nutshells, corn kernels, small wood chips, barley, beet pulp, sunflowers, dried cherry pits, and soybeans. |

When you’re looking for a mortgage, you’re likely to shop among lenders for the most favorable interest rate, and the lowest points and other up-front charges. When you find the most favorable terms and the lender that you want, you’ll apply to that lender. But when you get to settlement, will you actually receive the terms you applied or bargained for? Or will you find that the rate has changed -- and that your costs have gone up? Lock-ins on rates and points might offer you a way to ensure that what you shop for is what you get. This brochure explains what these arrangements mean. |

Snowboarding at Angel Fire Resort Ski Area |
Written by Angel Fire Blog Team Leader
Monday, 02 July 2007 |
Angel Fire is a modern, purpose-built resort about a half-hour—22 miles—east of Taos. The accommodations are all very close to the slopes and the mountain has been created for families and mellow skiing with touches of challenge. This resort is especially good for beginners and intermediates. You have to go out of your way to get into trouble. It's about as good as it gets for families and those who want to take it easy. The resort has added some expert terrain, but it's tucked away where no one will accidentally get into trouble. Beginners will want to take Headin' Home from the top of the high-speed Chile Express quad. Stay on the trail or drop down Bodacious and wend your way back to the base area. Beginners can also experience the back bowl by winding down Highway, then dropping off Hallelujah or La Bajada to end up at the base of the Southwest Flyer, another high-speed quad. Intermediates will have fun on Fat City, Fire Escape, Mother Lode and Arriba in the back bowl. We recommend staying in the back bowl. On the front side you can cruise down some good intermediate trails such as I-25, Prospector and Jasper's, but all end in a long runout to the base area. Advanced/Expert levels will find meager offerings but they can be fun. A cluster of black runs under Lift 6 provides a challenge. To the far skier's right of the back bowl, a series of advanced runs were recently added to Detonator and Nitro. New for 2005/06, the resort cut about 9 acres of glades on the front side between I-25 and Prospector. Angel Fire has snapped up the opportunity to become New Mexico's premier snowboarding destination, thanks to Taos' steadfast refusal to allow snowboarding. The Chile Express high-speed quad whisks boarders to the top of the 10,677-foot mountain. Sound systems pump out great tunes underneath the lifts. Angel Fire has a young feel to it, unlike the conservative, staid atmosphere of some larger resorts. Beginner boarders will appreciate both Dreamcatcher and Lift #2, servicing Exhibition and Valley. You get what is, in effect, a superb bunny hill with two distinct levels of difficulty. In addition there's beginner terrain at the top of the mountain, on either side of the NASTAR race area, that's served by a short lift. The Summit Haus, a yurt-style restaurant with a full-service bar at the peak, adds a nice extra touch. Intermediate and advanced riders will prefer the back side of the mountain, serviced by a high-speed quad. Hell's Bells is a favorite run amongst advanced boarders. Intermediates will enjoy Fire Escape and Hully Gully, shifting to front-side runs like I-25 and Prospector on days when the sun is hidden and snow is powering down. Unfortunately, front-side runs all end in a long runout to the base area. Expert snowboarders are not forgotten—hiking-accessed trails in the Back Basin including Nitro, Detonator and Baa-da-bing offer some of the steepest terrain on the mountain. Parks and pipes: The resort has two terrain parks. Liberation Park, for experienced park riders, is at the top of the mountain and is reached by its own chair, Lift #3. It has tabletops, spines, funboxes, rails and jumps. Lowrider Park, on the lower section of Headin' Home, is the learning park, with short rails, funboxes, small jumps and rollers. It's also the place to perfect your park technique. Angel Fire has the only halfpipe in New Mexico. You'll find it in Liberation Park. Angel Fire has an excellent ski school that focuses on beginner and intermediate skiers as well as children. Their snowboarding instruction is consistently highly rated too. The resort recently expanded its children's ski and snowboard school with a 6,000-square-foot building designed specifically for kids. Angel Fire Resort Day Care (800-633-7463), housed in a new state-of-the-art facility near the kids' ski school, is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Full-and half-day programs provide activities for children ages 6 weeks through 10 years. Costs range from $40 to $85 for day care and children's lesson programs. Adventure Park, at the base, has a day tubing hill. At the summit, you'll find 22 km. of cross-country and snowshoe trails with beautiful views of New Mexico's highest mountain, Wheeler Peak. Lessons and rentals are available. |

Tips for Handling Angel Fire Telemarketers |
Written by Angel Fire Team Leader
Friday, 22 June 2007 |
Tips for Handling Telemarketers Three Little Words That Work !! (1) The three little words are: "Hold On, Please..." Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off (instead of hanging-up immediately) would make each telemarketing call so much more time-consuming that boiler room sales would grind to a halt. Then when you eventually hear the phone company's "beep-beep-beep" tone, you know it's time to go back and hang up your handset, which has efficiently completed its task. These three little words will help eliminate telephone soliciting. (2) Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the other end? This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone calls and records the time of day when a person answers the phone. This technique is used to determine the best time of day for a "real" sales person to call back and get someone at home. What you can do after answering, if you notice there is no one there, is to immediately start hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7 times, as quickly as possible. This confuses the machine that dialed the call and it kicks your number out of their system. Gosh, what a shame not to have your name in their system any longer !!! (3) Junk Mail Help: When you get "ads" enclosed with your phone or utility bill, return these "ads" with your payment. Let the sending companies throw their own junk mail away. When you get those "pre-approved" letters in the mail for everything from credit cards to 2nd mortgages and similar type junk, do not throw away the return envelope. Most of these come with postage-paid return envelopes, right? It costs them more than the regular 41 cents postage "IF" and when they receive them back. It costs them nothing if you throw them away! The postage was around 50 cents before the last increase and it is according to the weight. In that case, why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it in these cool little, postage-paid return envelopes. One of Andy Rooney's (60 minutes) ideas. Send an ad for your local chimney cleaner to American Express. Send a pizza coupon to Citibank. If you didn't get anything else that day, then just send them their blank application back! If you want to remain anonymous, just make sure your name isn't on anything you send them. You can even send the envelope back empty if you want to just to keep them guessing! It still costs them 41 cents. The banks and credit card companies are currently getting a lot of their own junk back in the mail, but folks, we need to OVERWHELM them. Let's let them know what it's like to get lots of junk mail, and best of all they're paying for it...Twice! Let's help keep our postal service busy since they are saying that e-mail is cutting into their business profits, and that's why they need to increase postage costs again. You get the idea ! If enough people follow these tips, it will work ---- It takes just a minute or so, to do any of the above things, and it will help stop this junk stuff. Good Luck. THIS JUST MIGHT BE ONE WEB PAGE THAT YOU WILL WANT TO EMAIL TO YOUR FRIENDS |

This series of trails makes use of 3 meadow green belts (Deer, Elk, Bear) connected at the west end by the Coyote Trail and at the east end by the Bobcat Trail. Deer trailhead is behind the Valley Market; Elk and Bear trailheads are off of Bobcat Trail and all go to Coyote Trail. Additional entries are off of Via del Rey. These trails are natural soft surfaced trails are well marked and friendly for hiking, biking, snow-shoeing, and x-country skiing. My family vacationed in Angel Fire last month (Mar 2007) and when my husband sent off for a brochure to the Chamber of Commerce, he got something telling him to go online for info. Online it says to write for a brochure. Didn't make a good impression on him. Besides for all of that, AF would be a great place to retire and invest our respective talents. So I will use my wifely influence to convince him that AF is one of the best deals around. Help me out y'all!- Dawn - Houston |

Preserve Our Fire Control Access Trails |

Saturday, 28 April 2007 |
Too many new Angel Fire home builders are blocking access to our network of Fire Control Access trails.
A thoughtful generation, probably the LeBus family, built a network of access roads throughout the forest in Angel Fire. Today they look more like trails than roads, averaging 25 feet wide and completely cleared of trees these trails criss-cross Angel Fire home sites. |

A special thanks to the Angel Fire Golf Course Advisory Committee for providing this update on golf course improvements. Clubhouse and Pro Shop Location
Since the existing Country Club will not be in use this season, the resort purchased two temporary structures. One structure will house the pro shop and food & beverage operations. That structure will be located just to the south of the current chipping green, which will eliminate the use of the chipping green during the existence of the temporary pro shop. The other structure will be located in the existing parking lot above the putting green to house the golf carts. These structures will be erected as soon as possible. Until these structures are complete, the pro shop will be operating out of the existing country club building. Below are sample photographs of the Sprung® buildings that are being erected. |
